Gemalto ramps up Africa presence with Côte d’Ivoire office

14/01/15

French smartcard manufacturer Gemalto has boosted its West Africa presence with the opening of a new regional office in Cote d’Ivoire.

Gemalto, which already has offices and partnerships in South Africa, Gabon, Ghana, Morocco, Burkina, Kenya and Nigeria, said the expansion, noted that IT accounts for 10% of  Cote d’Ivoire’s GDP, and that it has a penetration rate of more than 90%.

“Gemalto is playing a key role in the digital revolution taking place in Africa, and has already demonstrated its position as a major player in the field of telecommunications, banking services and governmental programs,” noted Eric Claudel, President of Africa & Middle East for Gemalto.

“This new expertise and engineering hub will allow the implementation of an inverted innovation process, repurposing existing solutions to meet the needs and specificities of the local market. It also aims at designing Cote d’Ivoire’s products of tomorrow, in line with its president’s priority to turn it into an emerging country by 2020.”

Earlier this week Gemalto announced that it will deliver its Sealys eID card and Coesys Issuance solution to the Ministry of Interior of Uruguay for the country's eID programme.
