Gemalto releases study on national mobile ID

12/03/15

Digital security firm Gemalto has released a study into national mobile ID schemes that covers projects in Estonia, Finland, and which explores aspects such as interoperable citizen services.

“How can [authorities] maintain the virtues of Public Authority and the permanence of trust under the new conditions of a mobile world?“ asks Anna Piperal, the Ambassador of e-Estonia, in the report.

Governments should consider mobile devices as the primary – though not exclusive – point of contact with the citizen via which the modern-day social bond can be maintained, she adds.

The report goes on to offer definitions of social and digital identity, while covering the role of governments in offering digital id services.

“Mobile identity now plays a key role in the deployment of e-Government services [in Finland]. The return on investment is clear both for the public authorities and the private sector,” writes the study.

The White Paper on National Mobile ID schemes also studies Smart Cities in detail, describing them as “a cohesive whole which encompasses e-Government, sustainable society and the smart city”.
