Regula reveals document reader SDK for iOS/Android

15/07/16

Secure document reader firm Regula has developed a mobile passport recognition module for iOS/Android applications.

User need to take a picture of a passport data page or upload an existing one, and the module will read the document data and fill in the fields with required personal information.

The Regula Document Reader module is already used by airline companies and services dealing with identity documents (e.g. booking flights, hotel reservations, renting cars, etc.). Automatic form filling saves time and helps to avoid mistakes in personal data.

The firm noted in a statement that, thanks to the SDK, the process of passport data recognition takes no more than two seconds.

“There’s no need to position the document accurately and precisely in front of the camera (the passport can be tilted or turned upside down). As soon as the document machine readable zone gets in the camera view, personal data is recognized, processed and verified automatically”.

The module supports all MRZ types in ICAO 9303 compliant documents (passports, visas, ID cards) and ISO 18013 compliant documents (driver's licenses), as well as custom/non-standard MRZ filling formats used in a number of countries.

When processed, the MRZ lines are automatically parsed into separate fields (given name, surname, country, etc.). The module allows automatic authenticity verification of a document by validating dates, analysing MRZ checksums and check digits in compliance with ICAO 9303 and BSI TR-03105 Part 5.1.

Data recognition, processing and verification is carried out entirely on the device and requires no internet connection.
