Singapore’s Changi Airport to deploy multimodal tech

Changi Airport’s new Terminal 4 will feature a new multimodal biometric border check system using face, iris and fingerprint recognition.

Due to open later this year, the terminal will feature the full suite of biometric tech as part of plans to beef up border security at checkpoints across the island. Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Zuraidah Abdullah confirmed on Sunday that multiple biometric screening will also be introduced at all checkpoints besides T4.

She told The Sunday Times in an exclusive interview: "We have come across a lot of people, myself included, whose thumbprints cannot be read, for whatever reasons. With iris and facial screening, we can do one or all three, depending on the level of risk and threat situation."

Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs, had said in Parliament last November that it would take about two years for all checkpoints to be equipped with the capabilities.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) plans to accumulate iris images from citizens and permanent residents of Singapore from identity cards and passport applications.

Meanwhile, foreigners will go through other security initiatives like fingerprint scanning upon arrival and departure for verification against ICA records.
