AAMVA launches proof of concept for mDL

The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) has announced an operational Proof of Concept of a mobile Driver License (mDL).

A video demonstrating this mDL Proof of Concept was first shown during AAMVA’s Annual International Conference in San Francisco, CA, last month. At that occasion, AAMVA awarded RDW with a Certificate of Appreciation for their partnership and collaboration in mDL standardization and the mDL Proof of Concept.

AAMVA cooperates closely with RDW, the DMV of the Netherlands, for the international standardization of mobile Driver Licenses. The standards development work is validated by hands on proving of new technology concepts proposed for standardization. This practical approach to innovation ensures that high quality standards are set.

In a statement, UL said it was proud to have contributed to the mDL Proof of Concept, supporting RDW and AAMVA in their driver license standardization efforts.

Geoff Slagle, Director of Identity Management at AAMVA: “AAMVA would like to extend its appreciation to the UL team and the outstanding work that they have done and continue to do with mDL. Especially the video that has recently received so much praise from our community – the credit and kudos go to you all and the original work you put into bringing the value of visualization to what had been but concepts on paper. The AAMVA community owes a debt of thanks to you and RDW for your partnering with us in this very important work.”

“The effort from the UL team has been crucial in this project. Their expertise, attitude and hard work have been inspiring for us all. We see UL as a long term partner in providing first class advisory and test services.” Bas van den Berg, Head of Driving License Department at RDW, added.

Arjan Geluk, Principal Advisor, Transaction Security at UL, leads the Task Force in ISO/IEC for standardization of mobile Driver Licenses. Moreover, he has been appointed as Special Technical Advisor in AAMVA’s Joint mobile Driver License working group. The joint mDL working group unites driver licensing and informational technology officials from several US states, Canadian provinces and UL, with the mission to explore the mDL concept and make the initiative a reality.
