10 new EU members, 10 different passports

26 April 2006

On 1 May 2004, ten countries joined the European Union. Each has a unique history, and each contributes a unique passport, bringing the total number of basic EU passports to 25. This article contributed by Keesing’s Journal of Documents & Identity offers a brief introduction to the passports issued by the new EU member states. It also argues the case in favour of standardising EU passports. (Please note the article was authored in 2004 and some passport designs may have changed since.)
